Gayl Davies Finocchiaro

Gayl Finocchiaro lives and works in Sydney Australia. In her practice she prefers mediums such as watercolour and acrylic enhanced by collage. Her highly detailed work reflects her background in technical drawing.

Technical drawing is about precision where art is about expression. Instead of rejecting one side of her brain, She decided to embrace it and weave it into her work by precision cutting paper with a scalpel and putting it back together like a puzzle.

She has had the great good fortune of being mentored by fantastic artists who have inspired me to take my own path. She has also had recognition by being awarded several “Very Highly Commended” and “Highly Commended” awards at the OBF Art Exhibition and The Hills District Agricultural Art Exhibitions.

Household items inspire her because they are both beautiful and functional and tell you something about the owner. Gayl lives near a bird sanctuary so the beauty of these creatures as well as the colour and variety flowers also inspire.

In her recent work She is drawing these things together and working collage into more realistic looking images which you can best appreciate as you look closer. She uses Japanese papers as well as other hand made papers with the intention to show how much she appreciates their beauty and the art in their creation.

So after coming across some domestic inspiration she gets creative with composition and then accurately cut paper shapes to satisfy her desire to solve the puzzle before her. Gayl finds this aspect of her work challenging but cutting the paper by wielding a scalpel is very satisfying, a kind of mindfulness.

Gayl thinks that all visual artists are solving a visual puzzle. How you do that is what makes the work unique.
